High-energy lithium-ion (LIBs) and dual-ion batteries (DIBs) require improved binders for better performance and stability. Conventional binders like PVDF and PAA face challenges with silicon anodes and high-voltage cathodes. We developed LiA-TBA, a single-ion conducting polymer binder from Li[ATFSI], a lithium sulfonylimide salt, and tert-butyl acrylate (TBA). SuFEx synthesis enables large-scale, pure Li[ATFSI] monomer production. LiA-TBA can be thermally converted to LiA-PAA, avoiding side reactions in direct LiA-PAA synthesis. Among samples with varying Li[ATFSI] content (0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8), LiA-TBA 0.2 showed best results. In dual-ion batteries with natural graphite cathodes and lithium anodes, LiA-TBA 0.2 outperformed commercial PVDF binders in capacity, coulombic efficiency, and rate capability. Its flexibility and ionic conductivity make it promising for high-voltage, rate batteries. Future work will explore other monomers via SuFEx, LIB uses, and sodium substitution for Na-DIBs.
