Microgel assemblies have high porosity and a reversible frictional force, making them a promising form for 3D printing in the biomedical field. Because most microgels are isotropic and spherical, which have limitations in guiding cell alignment, recent studies have focused on developing anisotropic microgels for cell alignment. Silk fibroin, a natural fibrous protein, has excellent biocompatibility and high mechanical strength, making it an attractive candidate for 3D printing inks.
In this study, we fabricate anisotropic silk fibroin microgels through carboxymethylation. Silk fibroin directly modified to keep anisotropic structures. Carboxymethylated silk fibroin (CMSF) was 3D printable, and aligned along the printing direction. To stabilize the printed structure, they were frozen and immersed in an acidic solution, maintaining their shape in the liquid phase. In this result, CMSF inks are expected to be used as a 3D printable cell guidance scaffold.
