Multimodal cancer theranostics, integrating therapy and diagnosis in a single system, has attracted significant attention. Photodynamic (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) are non-invasive treatments where a photosensitizer, upon light excitation, induces cancer cell death via reactive oxygen species or localized hyperthermia, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides accurate tumor visualization using contrast agents. However, conventional organic agents often suffer from poor stability and long-term toxicity. To address this, we propose an upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) system with optimized gadolinium (Gd) and iron (Fe) content in the core and shell to enhance PDT and PTT effects. The Gd and Fe also enable dual-mode T₁/T₂ MRI imaging. This multifunctional UCNP platform presents a promising strategy for integrated cancer diagnosis and treatment.
