To promote the safer and more efficient use of X-rays, the development of high-performance, lead-free shielding materials is essential. In this study, gadolinium (Gd) was strategically incorporated into an aerogel using a phase separation strategy to create a unique "photon cage" structure. This structure effectively prolonged the residence time of photons and enhanced multiple internal scattering events. As a result, the fabricated aerogels exhibited excellent X-ray shielding efficiencies, ranging from 76.4% to 97.2% within the 40-120 keV energy range. These findings present a promising pathway toward the development of flexible, high-efficiency, lead-free X-ray shielding materials.
