X-ray radiation is essential in medical, industrial, military, and space applications. While lead (Pb) is commonly used for shielding, its toxicity and weight are major drawbacks. To provide a safer alternative, we developed a lightweight composite using gadolinium-based metal-organic frameworks (Gd-MOF) and bismuth halides. Gd-MOF enhances chemical bonding and absorption of bismuth halides into a sponge matrix, improving shielding performance. The optimized material absorbed 1.34 g of bismuth halide and achieved high shielding efficiency—94% at 60 kV and 78% at 100 kV—at a low density of 1.21 g/cm³.
