Unlike other thermoset-based composite manufacturing processes, sheet molding compound (SMC) offers advantages for the mass production of carbon fiber (CF) composites. However, SMC has limitations in high-strength applications due to weak interfacial bonding between the fibers and resin. In this study, continuous atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment was applied to CF to introduce functional groups and increase surface roughness, thereby enhancing interfacial adhesion and improving the overall strength of the composites. The introduction of functional groups was analyzed using XPS and FT-IR. The surface energy was calculated from contact angle measurements. The changes in surface roughness were observed using AFM and SEM. The mechanical properties of the composite were evaluated using a UTM and DMA. The results showed that plasma-treated CF significantly improved the mechanical strength of SMC composites, increased treatment time leading to further enhancement.
