Li[Ni1-x-yCox(Mn and/or Al)y]Ocathodes have become the dominant choice for rechargeable battery applications. Conventional cathode development has largely focused on increasing nickel content to boost energy density. However, cathodes with ultra-high Ni content face significant chemical and mechanical instability. One such strategy involves adopting single-crystal cathodes to eliminate interparticle grain boundaries, thereby reducing the formation of microcracks and enhancing thermal and cycling stability by minimizing surface degradation. Despite these advantages, single-crystal cathodes still face specific degradation challenges. This presentation provides a detailed comparative study of single-crystal and polycrystalline cathodes across a range of Ni-rich compositions. Structural evolution and electrochemical behavior are examined to elucidate the dominant capacity fading mechanisms in single-crystal systems compared to that in polycrystalline cathode.
