Eight ionic liquids were synthesized by combining dodecyltrimethylammonium or octyltrimethylammonium cations with four fluorinated anions. Among them, [N11112][OTf], [N11112][BF4], and [N1118][BF4] exhibited UCST behavior in water at 20 wt%, with transition temperatures of 35, 45, and 39 oC, and conductivities of 9.22, 19.01, and 32.13 mS/cm. In forward osmosis using deionized water, water fluxes were 18.75, 27.87, and 34.59 LMH in the AL-FS mode and 20.34, 36.09, and 37.53 LMH in the AL-DS mode. With brackish water fluxes were 12.39, 22.80, and 31.56 LMH in the AL-Fs mode and 15.39, 29.94, and 33.15 LMH in the AL-DS mode. Recycling of [N1118][BF4] showed flux decline from 37.53 to 12.18 LMH over four thermal cycles. Antibacterial testing showed over 99% inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus. These results demonstrate the potential of UCST-type ionic liquids as thermoresponsive and antibacterial draw solutes for forward osmosis.
