Microplastics are widespread aquatic contaminants, yet conventional size-exclusion membrane filters show limited capture efficiency. Thin adhesive layers have been used to improve performance, but typically require toxic organic solvents. Here, we present a polarity-switchable adhesive copolymer containing maleic anhydride (MA). Upon base treatment, the copolymer becomes hydrophilic and water/ethanol-soluble; subsequent heat triggers ring closure, restoring hydrophobicity and forming a stable adhesive layer under aqueous conditions. This eco-friendly, solvent-free coating enhances microplastic capture and enables odorless, large-scale spray application. The reversible polarity-switching mechanism also offers a sustainable route for filter recycling.
