To improve the water resistance of paper-based packaging materials, a high-performance emulsion coating applicable to such substrates was developed. In this study, an acrylic waterborne emulsion was synthesized and evaluated. The monomers used included 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and acrylic acid, with sodium dodecyl sulfate as the emulsifier and ammonium persulfate as the initiator. Following emulsion polymerization, the resultant emulsion was neutralized and treated with tert-butyl hydroperoxide to remove unreacted monomers. The glass transition temperatures and coating performance on paper substrates were evaluated for emulsions with varying monomer compositions and synthesis procedures. Formulations with well-controlled thermal properties and excellent adhesion were identified, confirming their potential for water-resistant paper-based packaging. This advancement is expected to promote the adoption of eco-friendly coating materials.
