Precise Synthesis of Copolymers Containing Poly(4-Hydroxystyrene) Segment via Living Anionic Polymerization and Selective Deprotection

The anionic polymerization of hydroxyl-protected styrene derivatives, 4-(tert-butyldimethylsiloxy)styrene (A), 4-tert-butoxystyrene (B), 4-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)styrene (C) and 4-(1-ethoxyethoxy)styrene (D) was performed using sec-butyllithium in THF at -30°C. Well-defined poly(A), poly(B), poly(C) and poly(D) with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions were synthesized within 10 min without any side reactions. Based on these results, well-controlled poly(A-co-B), poly(A-co-C) and poly(A-co-D) copolymers were initially prepared through the anionic copolymerizations of A and B, A and C, A and D. Subsequently, poly(4-hydroxystyrene)-co-poly(B), poly(4-hydroxystyrene)-co-poly(C) and poly(4-hydroxystyrene)-co-poly(D) were obtained through a selective deprotection reaction.
