Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are promising hole-selective layers in organic solar cells (OSCs), but their role in device stability is not fully understood. While SAMs can increase the work function (WF) of indium tin oxide (ITO), they do not always form uniform layers that optimize both performance and stability. To address this, two carbazole-based SAMs, named CBZC4 and CBZC2, were developed by adding tert-butyl groups at the 3,6-positions of the carbazole core. This improves energy-level alignment and film uniformity. Light-soaking and aging tests reveal SAM degradation due to reactions with oxygen and moisture. CBZC2 showed excellent stability, maintaining over 99% of its power conversion efficiency (PCE) after UV exposure, outperforming PEDOT:PSS and MeO-2PACz. The high efficiency and long-term stability are linked to lower interfacial resistance and longer charge lifetimes, making CBZC2 a strong alternative to hygroscopic PEDOT:PSS.
