Thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU) exhibits low thermal stability limits its applicability in harsh environments such as those required for cable applications. To address this issue, this study aimed to enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of TPU by blending with polybutylene terephthalate(PBT). When PBT was blended into the TPU matrix in the range of 5 to 35 wt%, the blend with 30 wt% PBT showed the most favorable properties. Subsequently, epoxy-based chain extender was added to the 30 wt% PBT composition at 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 phr, and the blend containing 0.6 phr exhibited the most enhancement. In particular, a notable increase in the Vicat temperature was observed, and surface analysis by SEM confirmed that the polymer phases were most uniformly dispersed under the 0.6 phr condition. Optimizing the blend and chain extender content in TPU/PBT blends is effective in improving material performance and suggests potential for future application in high-performance cable materials.
