A diarylethene-based zwitterionic molecule (DZM) was developed and incorporated into photochromic films exhibiting tunable optical and ionic conductive behaviors. The zwitterionic moiety, in conjunction with dendritic alkyl chains, drives hierarchical self-assembly, forming nanostructured domains that are directionally aligned via shear-coating processes. This molecular ordering imparts anisotropic photochromic characteristics and polarization-selective optical effects. Structural investigations reveal that the zwitterionic interlocking mechanism plays a role in generating aligned nanocolumns, which underlie the polarization-sensitive color changes. Under alternating UV and visible light irradiation, the films display reversible color transitions alongside modulated ionic conductivity, highlighting their promise for use in anti-counterfeiting applications. The research received substantial support from the BK Four Program and Basic Research Laboratory Program (RS-2023-00207836).
