The demand for sustainable and high-performance materials has increased interest in water-borne polyimide (W-PI) systems. Unlike conventional polyimides made with toxic solvents, W-PIs use poly(amic acid) salt (PAAS) chemistry in water, enabling green and energy-efficient processing. This study presents a platform for functional W-PI composites, from surfactant-assisted polymerization of aromatic monomers to eco-friendly nanocomposite fabrication. By tuning molecular structures and interfaces, W-PIs show excellent compatibility with fillers such as porous silica, graphene nanoribbons, and 2D siloxene, leading to low-dielectric insulators, conductive films, and lithium-ion battery binders. W-PI films with high dielectric strength also show potential in electronics. The resulting materials match or exceed the performance of solvent-based systems while reducing environmental impact.
