A thiophene based trialkyl benzamide (TTBA) consisting of thiophene based conjugated core and flexible alkyl dendrons is newly designed and synthesized. TTBAs form self-assembled nanocolumns of hexagonal columnar phase via hydrogen-bonded discotic aromatic cores and π-π stacking. Due to the high mobility of the nanocolumns, a two layered thin film was fabricated by shearing TTBAs onto uniaxially aligned rod-like nematic reactive mesogens. Optical analyses confirm that the axis of nanocolumns is perpendicular to the maximum refractive axis, indicating that the shear direction corresponds to the ordinary axis. These films exhibit not only high transmittance and colorlessness but also negative dispersion retardation by the orthogonal orientation between two layers. Consequently, the fabricated film can act as a biaxial quarter-wave plate for antireflective thin films. This work is supported by BK21 Four and the Mid-Career Researcher Program (RS-2021-NR059321).
