Development of Functional Contact Lenses for Commercialization

Hydrogel contact lenses have traditionally been used for vision correction, but recently, their application range has been expanded, such as contact lenses for clinical treatment, and color contact lenses for cosmetic purposes. Most of the general soft contact lenses are polymerized with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), but carbon-based lens materials such as HEMA harm the wearer's eye health due to their low oxygen permeability. Accordingly, silicone has been used as an optimized material for high oxygen permeability lenses because of its high oxygen dispersion rate, and many studies on silicone lenses are being conducted. In terms of materials, lenses with excellent biocompatibility are being developed through copolymerization or surface modification proteins and bacteria-resistant materials. In addition, functional contact lenses such as astigmatism correction and multifocal lenses are being developed by adjusting the shape and refractive index of the lens. In this presentation, we would like to present the recent research and commercialization of functional contact lenses (for drug delivery, antioxidant function, protein non-adsorption, high oxygen transmittance and blue light blocking, etc.).
