Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a low-density bio-based filler which can provide polymer composites with high mechanical properties. However, strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding among MCC deteriorates the dispersion in polymer matrices and thereby limits the reinforcement of the composites. In this presentation, I will discuss the effects of functional groups of chemically modified microcrystalline methyl cellulose (m-MMC) on the mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane composites. The structure–property relationships of the MCC composites will provide insights for rational designing of eco-friendly polymer composites.
