Solar desalination systems are pivotal technologies for harnessing sustainable energy. In this research, a silicone composite was fabricated using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to enhance evaporation efficiency. By obtaining HPC with aligned pores through freeze casting and crosslinking, liquid polydimethylsiloxane was infiltrated into the HPC framework, forming the HPC/silicone composite. The HPC exhibited a low critical solution temperature (LCST) characteristic at 45 degree C, enabling effective seawater pumping based on the solar diurnal motion, resulting in a pump efficiency of 92.3%. Moreover, attaching HPC with a porous structure to the condensation plate provided a cooling effect, around 3.4 degrees lower than the bare plate. Three types of porous structures were prepared for HPC with porous structures. Temperature-sensitive cellulose-based solar desalination devices can significantly contribute to environmental conservation and resource efficiency.
