Addition effects of silanol-tethered graphene on adhesion strength of room-temperature-vulcanizing oxime type adhesives

Graphene is widely used for high performance polymer adhesives, polymer composites and transparent conductive films. However, the weak interactions between pristine graphenes and polymeric matrices would result in interfacial slippage when stress is increased to an extent, limiting the improvement of adhesion strength. In this study, to induce chemical bonding between the polymer matrix and graphenes, silanol groups were introduced by a reaction between pristine graphene and a silane coupling agent, bis(trimethoxysilyl)-4-oxa-8-azaundecan-6-ol, and the silanol-tethered graphene was utilized as a reinforcement of the room-temperature-vulcanizing oxime-type adhesive. By the incorporation of the silanol-tethered graphenes, adhesion strength was improved by 27.7%, compared to that of the adhesive without them. In contrast, the addition of the pristine graphene decreased the adhesion strength.
