Applications of microneedles for drug delivery in improving skin diseases

Certain skin diseases are chronic autoimmune diseases associated with the skin. Currently, as a drug administration route for improving skin diseases, systemic administration may entail serious immunosuppression and the risk of pathogen infection, and drug administration through an ointment is not satisfactory because it cannot effectively penetrate skin lesions. In this study, to improve these specific skin diseases, microneedles that can be minimally invasive while reducing patient discomfort are manufactured. Microneedles are called third-generation topical/percutaneous drug delivery systems because they can carry large and small molecules for subbody and systemic effects that bypass the stratum corneum of the skin. The mechanical properties of the fabricated microneedle penetrating the skin of patients with specific dermatological diseases with a thick epidermal layer were measured, and the release power of the loaded drug for psoriasis healing was evaluated.
