Steel/polymer composites (SPCs) are in high demand in industrial fields requiring weight reduction. The development of SPCs for structural material are influenced by the interfacial adhesion between steel and polymer. Thus, this study aims at enhancing this interfacial adhesion by improving the chemical and physical interactions at the steel/polymer interface. We used electro-galvanized steel, polyethylene (PE), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), and Nylon 6 to fabricate SPCs. Through an organosilane coupling reaction, the primary amines were anchored on the steel surface and maleic anhydrides (MAs) were introduced onto the surface of the polymer film via the photo-initiated grafting method. The chemical covalent bonds formed at the interface was called molecular adhesion. When molecular adhesion was applied, the adhesion strength of the materials dramatically increased from 0 to 11.5 MPa for PE, from 1.5 to 11.1 MPa for ABS, and from 12.7 to 14.1 MPa for Nylon 6.
