Semi-IPN Poly(Acrylic Acid) Binders for Si anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Poly(acrylic acid)s (PAA) have been recognized as potential binders for silicon (Si)-based Li-ion batteries owing to the strong interaction of carboxylic acids with the silicon surface. In Si anodes, binders are desired to provide adhesion and to dissipate mechanical stress during repeated volume change. However, the linear and stiff nature of PAA is inadequate to mitigate the volume-induced stresses of Si anode for prolonged cycles. In this regard, crosslinking of the PAA is considered an effective strategy to modulate the mechanical properties of PAA and thereby stabilize the Si anode. For this purpose, we synthesize semi-IPN binders consisting of linear PAA and poly(beta-amino ester) network with multiple hydroxyl groups. Comparison of the linear and semi-IPN PAA binders reveals that the semi-IPN structure provides superior performance in terms of mechanical toughness and electrochemical stability of Si anode.
