Bioactive glass (BG) induces rapid bone regeneration through ion release. The ionic dissolution from BG activates several genes that control differentiation. However, there is limited osteoconduction observed with the BG scaffold itself. Along with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in bone tissue engineering, Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) has been widely used to successfully induce healing in those defects. The purpose of this study is to identify the osteogenic differentiation process of MSCs derived bone marrow according to BMP2 modified BG and to determine the appropriate concentration of BMP2 to promote reconstruction of critical size defects in spine defect model.
