Self-Assembled Metal-Organic Membranes for Scavenging Free radical at the Interface

Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce oxidative stress in the skin, leading to aging. Inorganic UV filters like zinc oxide exhibit high photo-reactivity, readily generating ROS. Certain organic compounds with antioxidant properties (such as phytic acid) are crosslinked through metal ions, resulting in the formation of polymer-like structure. In this study, we present a facile coating system that utilizes metal organic membrane (MOM) structures with the potential to function as interfacial antioxidants. We confirmed the successful formation of MOM-coating on zinc oxide and its constant sun protection performance. Additionally, it was observed by DPPH assay that the MOM antioxidant effectively scavenges radicals. These results highlighted that MOM can prevent ROS generation on the surface of inorganic UV filters. Furthermore, we expect that MOM-coating can be a promising interfacial antioxidant system which maintaining the oxidative stability of the emulsion.
