Antioxidants are important functional ingredients in cosmetics and medicine due to their skin whitening, anti-aging effects, and allergy prevention when applied to human body. However, they easily oxidize in the presence of moisture and oxygen, which is a major hurdle for their commercialization. Here, we utilize biodegradable polymer colloids as a carrier for loading antioxidants to effectively protect and enhance their activity. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with various molecular weights was synthesized and successfully formulated into particles through nanoprecipitation technique. Ascorbic acid 6-palmitate (Asc6Palm), an alkylated derivative of Vitamin C, was used as a model antioxidant to probe the effect of PLA particle carrier. Up to 15 % of Asc6Palm was successfully loaded into the particles, and the long-term stability was evaluated through 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay and UV-Vis spectra showing a significantly slower rate of oxidation compared to the Asc6Palm raw materials.
