Selective monitoring of glucose among similar sugars such as lactose, galactose, sucrose, and fructose has been designed by a porous honeycomb-patterned (HCP) polymer film. The HCP film is functionalized with glucose oxidase (GOx) immobilized on bioinspired 2D fractal-structured pH-responsive polyaniline (b-PANI/GOx). Due to a high pH sensitivity of the b-PANI in the morphology and conductivity, b-PANI/GOx acts as a smart polymer sensitive to pH by [H+] generation from the gluconic acid (GA) that is formed by the selective enzymatic reaction of glucose and GOx. It corresponds to a micro-reactor system owing to the generation of H+ stimulation to pH-sensitive b-PANI sequentially occurring inside the pores of HCP film in a limited micro room. The selectivity was increased by the inclusion of highly conductive reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in the film backbone.
