Fabrication of Environmentally Friendly PVDF-Grafted Cellulose Membrane for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

A superhydrophobic PVDF-grafted cellulose membrane (PVDF-g-CM) was successfully fabricated for effective oil/water separation. The PVDF grafting was achieved through surface-initiated polymerization using RAFT/MADIX on a cellulose membrane with RAFT CTA functional groups. PVDF, known for its hydrophobic nature owing to the C-F bonds, exhibited excellent chemical and thermal stability, making it an ideal choice for grafting in oil/water separation applications. The superhydrophobic PVDF-g-CM exhibited a water contact angle (WCA) of approximately 150° and demonstrated outstanding separation efficiency for oil/water mixtures. Furthermore, the PVDF-g-CM displayed remarkable stability in multiple separation cycles, surpassing the physical, chemical, and thermal stability of PVDF-coated CM.
