Formation of Covalent Adapting Networks via Photo-initiated Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate and Oxime Carbamate-based Crosslinker

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) are polymer networks containing covalent bonds, that can undergo reversible dissociation based on their inherent properties. This unique feature grants CANs exceptional processability absent in traditional polymer networks, while retaining superior mechanical strength. However, many previously reported CANs exhibited noticeable coloration, limiting transparent applications like PMMA glass. To address this challenge, Zhengwei et al. introduced colorless oxime carbamate-based CANs. Nevertheless, photo-polymerization of these CANs remains unresolved, a crucial step in processes like Vat photo-polymerization or low-temperature techniques.

In this study, we aimed to photo-copolymerize methyl methacrylate and an oxime carbamate-based crosslinker to form CANs. Network structures were examined through acetone-induced swelling experiments, and thermal properties assessed using DSC and DMA. Our findings successfully demonstrate photo-copolymerization in CANs.
