Development of Organic Solvent-Absorbing Sensor Using a Janus-Type Conductive PDMS Sponge

Porous elastomers are attracting significant attention as promising selective oil absorption materials in marine and underwater pollution. In addition, there is a strong demand for a sensor capable of absorbing contaminated oil and quantitatively detecting it. A silicon-based elastomer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely utilized in the oil-absorbing material due to excellent oil absorption and its durability under contaminated condition. In this regard, we have controlled the hydrophilicity and water-absorption properties of a Janus-type sponge composite. The Janus-type sponge composite is constructed using a non-ionic surfactant and sugar template to control its amphiphilicity. This Janus-type structure has great advantages of not only absorbing oil but also coating a conductive polymer on a pore surface, which is dissolved in aqueous condition in the sponge. These results will pave a way to fabricate a PDMS-PEDOT:PSS sensor to detect oil contamination, microleaks respectively.
