Computing system based on artificial neuron networks has great potential to overcome the von Neumann bottlenecks and significantly improve computing efficiency. Photonic synapses, for artificial visual system applications, have been attracting much interest because they can conduce to improved efficiency in external visual information processing. In this study, a visible light-cognitive photonic synapse, which utilizes a photo-sensitive polymer as a floating gate layer of organic field effect transistor (FET) memory architecture, is designed. The synaptic device successfully emulates various synaptic characteristics including excitatory post-synaptic current, paired-pulse facilitation, and the transition of short-term potentiation to long-term potentiation. Moreover, leveraging the EPSC responses modulated by light signals, photonic synapse can hold promise for application in wireless communication by converting optical signals of the International Morse code to distinct EPSC signals.
