Macromer for regulating β-sheet properties of silk fibroin

The petroleum based plastics can cause enormous environmental pollution, therefore, non-petroleum based bioplastics are needed. Today, however, bioplastics have the disadvantage of weak mechanical properties. Herein, we report the technology that can improve the mechanical properties of silk fibroins(SF) that can be used as raw materials for bioplastics. we synthesized a substance called ”macromer” which has three ether-containing functional groups that bond with SF via hydrogen bond. Through templated assembly, bonded macromer induces the rapid formation of β-sheets and Di-Tyr bonds that impart mechanical properties to silk. We interpreted kinetics and mechanism of templated assembly between macromer and SF through several kinds of macromers that interact differently sith SF. By using those macromers, SF’s mechanical properties like toughness and strength can be regulated, thus enabling proper use as bioplastics.
