Poly[methyl(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)siloxane] (PMTFPS) has a wide range of commercial applications due to its excellent properties such as low temperature flexibility, high thermal stability, and low surface energy. PMTFPS can be synthesized by anionic ring-opening polymerization using 1,3,5-tris(trifluoropropylmethyl)cyclotrisiloxane (D3F) monomer. In many cases, however, the D3F monomer is converted into another cyclic compound, such as D4F or D5F and so on, by a back-biting reaction during polymerization. As a result, it makes difficult to control the molecular weight and has a disadvantage in that the polymerization yield is also low. In this study, alcohol initiators and catalysts were introduced to establish conditions for polymerizing PMTFPS with high polymerization yield and various molecular weights using D3F monomers. In addition, it is expected that various applications will be possible by synthesizing PMTFPS having various functional groups at the ends using an end-capping agent.
