Due to the wide range of potential applications (e.g. such as scaffolds and sorbents), porous polymers have attracted a lot of attention. However, traditional fabrication methods require high energy costs and/or hazardous chemicals. Therefore, the research has been focused on creating efficient and environmentally friendly methods. In this study, we introduced a spray-assisted water templating approach that uses a normal spray machine and UV light to create polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponges without the use of surfactants. The resulting PDMS sponge has a high porosity (80.8%) and can efficiently absorb various types of oils. Furthermore, the fabricated PDMS sponges were evaluated to maintain their structural integrity and oil adsorption capacity even after 20 absorption/desorption cycles. This study can help promote simple, environmentally friendly methods for making porous polymers.
