Towards Sustainable and Recyclable Urethane Modified Epoxy Resins: Incorporating Carbamate Groups through Non-Isocyanate Routes

Epoxy resins are widely used for their excellent properties, but brittleness limits their toughness and impact strength. To address this, we proposed urethane modified epoxy resins with carbamate groups. The circular plastic economy's focus on recyclability and sustainability emphasized eco-friendly, non-isocyanate routes in urethane synthesis. Ideal resins should be bio-based, non-isocyanate, and recyclable. Inspired by vitrimers, we aimed to incorporate eco-friendly urethane bonds through transcarbamoylation. Using a non-isocyanate route with CO2-derived materials, we synthesized these resins. Films exhibited stress relaxation via Arrhenius kinetics, calculating vitrimer transition temperature(Tv). Reprocessing tests confirmed recyclability. This study offers a promising approach for sustainable, recyclable urethane modified epoxy resins with versatile applications.
