Autonomous Free Radical Polymerization of Nano-sized Hydrogels via Internally Generated Peroxides from PEGDA Radical Polymerization

In the process of polymerizing using Poly(ethyleneglycol) Diacrylate (PEGDA), radicals reacting with the PEG backbone can form Formate groups and peracetic acid (PAA) end groups. The weakly bonded PAA can spontaneously degrade. At low PEGDA concentrations, free radical polymerization forms nano-sized hydrogels (NG), capable of a second radical polymerization due to internally generated PAA and partially unreacted acrylate group. Quantification of PAA was done using the Fenton reaction and NMR confirmed remaining acrylate content. Rheometer analysis showed NG can undergo self-initiated free radical polymerization, using its internal radical from PAA without external induction. This study proposes a method where NG autonomously undergoes free radical polymerization with its internal radicals.
