Oncolytic bacteria show promise as anaerobic bacteria for targeted cancer therapy because they selectively germinate in hypoxic tumor sites. However, the systematic delivery of Oncolytic spores is challenging. To address this issue, researchers used electrostatic attraction and magnetic nanoparticles to create multifunctional porous microspheres (MPMs) containing Oncolytic spores. Biodegradable MPMs based on polylactic acid were coated with a cationic polyethyleneimine polymer and loaded with negatively charged Oncolytic spores. This innovative approach allows for targeted delivery to the tumor site using an external magnetic field, minimizing potential side effects. In vitro testing confirmed the effective encapsulation of the spores and showed promise for cancer immunotherapy as the released spores were activated. The activated spores induced tumor cell death and triggered an immune response, showing promise for imaging-guided cancer therapy.
