Acrylic soft contact lenses crosslinked by photodimerization

Soft lenses are usually manufactured using acrylic monomers, and crosslinking agents are essential during the manufacturing process. The crosslinking agent forms a crosslinking core at the same time as polymerization and forms a network structure in the polymer to increase the shape stability of the lens, but reduces the mobility of the polymer chain to reduce the tensile strength and flexibility of the lens. In this study, a new acrylic monomer with a photo-reactive group was synthesized, replacing the existing crosslinking agent. Unlike conventional crosslinking agents, a crosslinking structure was introduced into the lens through photo-dimerization through post-UV irradiation after lens manufacturing. Through this, the problems of the existing crosslinking system were improved. In addition, after copolymerizing with various acrylic monomers, various physical properties were measured to compare the effect of adding new crosslinking agents.
