Synthesis and characterization of polymer containing acidic moieties for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis

A polymer containing chemical stable, rigid backbone and flexible side chain with acidic moiety was rationally designed and synthesized. The polymer was synthesized by a superacid-catalyzed condensation polymerization and subsequent functionalization of sulfonic acid moieties for proton conduction. Successful synthesis of the polymer was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). In addition, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and ionic conductivity of the polymer was evaluated. Consequently, the polymer exhibited promising potential for utilization in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis applications.
