Recently, octopus inspired adhesives have gained attention owing to their ability to achieve high adhesion. We propose a smart adhesive pad that mimics the octopus adhesion system and offers tunable adhesion in response to temperature and near-infrared (NIR) light. The smart adhesive pad utilizes photothermally responsive gold nanostar (GNS) and thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel on a nano hole-patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to control the adhesion. The PNIPAM coated on the hole allows for the adjustment of inner cavity pressure by swelling or shrinking of the hydrogel under cooling or heating. The smart adhesive pad shows strong adhesion up to 134 kPa at 45 °C and large on-off ratio (~63). The photothermally excited GNS increase the temperature under NIR light irradiation, resulting in high adhesion force of 71 kPa. We demonstrated the transfer of an ultrathin temperature sensor onto an organ using the smart adhesive pad under NIR light irradiation.
