Recently, synergistic photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with other cancer therapeutic strategies has attracted a great deal of interest due to their improving treatment efficiency than monotherapy. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) composed of lanthanide ions can be excited by multiple low-energy photons and emit high-energy photons with shorter wavelengths, overcoming PDT efficacy caused by commercialized photosensitizers with low penetration depth. In this study, we developed UCNP-based multifunctional nanocarriers for NIR-activated combination cancer therapy. In vitro experiments demonstrated that multifunctional UCNP-based nanocarriers have synergistic antitumor efficacy.
