Poly(vinyl alcohol) is well known as a biodegradable polymer and has excellent oxygen barrier property because of high internal cohesion due to side hydroxyl groups and thus can be used as a coating material for packaging. However, its intrinsic lack of water resistance limits its use as a coating material for blocking moisture. In this study, we tried to improve water resistance by mixing poly(vinyl alcohol) with other types of polymers. Polymer network structures were generated during drying after casting this mixture, which was confirmed by FT-IR analysis. The prepared film showed a lower degree of water swelling and a higher contact angle than the conventional poly(vinyl alcohol) film, and these characteristics were further improved as the drying temperature increased. A film crosslinked at an optimum temperature can maintain low oxygen permeability inherent in poly(vinyl alcohol).
