Polypropylene (PP) is widely used polymer in various fields including electronics, architecture, transportation, and so on. However, PP also has shortcomings such as poor flame retardancy. In this study, melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microcapsule containing phosphorus flame retardants were introduced to PP. Ammonium polyphosphate and modified calcium carbonate were also used as auxiliary flame retardants. In addition, polytetrafluoroethylene was used for anti-dripping agent for PP. Flame retarding PP was extruded through a twin screw extruder. Volatility of phosphorus flame retardant was depressed by the MF microcapsule structure and the effect of auxiliary flame retardants. Delayed pyrolysis of phosphorus flame retardant can enhance the char formation and flame retardancy of PP.
