Microstructure-Engineered Polymeric Hard Carbon Materials for Use in Next-Generation Rechargeable Batteries

Sodium- and Potassium-ion batteries (SIBs and PIBs) have attracted much attention as next-generation rechargeable batteries owing to abundant and ubiquitous sodium and potassium resources and their similar chemistry to lithium. However, SIBs and PIBs show insufficient energy densities because of heavier and larger ionic radius of sodium and potassium, requiring high-performance active electrode materials. Hard carbon (HC) can be one of the most promising anode candidates in mass-scalable materials, owing to its well-balanced electrochemical performances and tunable properties. Nevertheless, understanding for the alkali ion storage behaviors in hard carbons is lacking, and more importantly, there is no guidance for fabrication of high-performance hard carbon anode materials for SIBs and PIBs. In this study, sodium- and potassium ion storage mechanism on various hard carbon anode materials are investigated, and optimal hard carbon materials were developed for both SIBs and PIBs.
