Gauze, both in hospitals and daily life, is actively used to prevent additional infection and enhance the healing effects of wounds. However, conventional gauze has low antimicrobial properties and is difficult to use alone. In this study, we confirmed the improved antimicrobial properties of gauze by coating its surface with materials composed of silver (Ag) metal nanoparticles. The synthesis of antimicrobial substances involved the encapsulation of chamomile extract and silica to reduce the toxicity of metal ions, impart a bright color, and enhance thermal stability. Two antimicrobial tests, the disc diffusion method and the pour plating method using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, showed excellent antimicrobial efficacy of over 90%. As a result, the gauze material developed in this study exhibited inherent antimicrobial capability and is expected to be effective in infection prevention due to enhanced antimicrobial sustainability through encapsulation.
