Synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethane using cyclic carbonate terminated polycarbonates

We have developed a viable procedure for making non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPU). First, α,ω-hydroxyl terminated poly(ether-carbonate) polyol was prepared via ring-opening copolymerization of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide using a double metal cyanide catalyst. Then the cyclic carbonate-terminated poly poly(ether-carbonate) precursors were synthesized using oxalyl chloride and glycerol carbonate. The desired NIPUs were achieved by reacting the prepared precursors with various diamines. In particular, the NIPU synthesized using m-xylylenediamine has a high gel content (67.98 %) and exhibit excellent tensile strength (5.66 MPa), high thermal stability (639.81 °C), glass transition temperature (-27.13 °C) and chemical resistance, and contact angle (54.03°) which is expected as a promising alternative to commonly used polyurethane coatings.
