With the increased demand for sustainability, energy consumption, and carbon footprint associated with construction and buildings have become an important issue. Buildings and structures can be made more environmentally friendly by enhancing their lifespan and functionality, reducing maintenance and repair costs. The effective method is to cover the surface of the structures with a protective layer, while it would require good bonding between the structure substrate and the coating material. The method of enhancing the bonding is to activate the interaction between the structure substrate and the coating material. In this study, we introduce the use of the clay as reinforcement for a hydrophilic composite, which is bonded to a structure substrate, to improve the interaction with structure materials. The mechanism for enhancing interaction using clay was intensively explored, and the potential applications to a variety of fields are discussed in detail.
