Children can build any machines and architectures from LEGO blocks with imagination. Similar to this, through microscale LEGO engineering, we aim to realize active functional materials that can respond and operate in multi-modal programmable ways. As a starting point, we have fabricated three types of anisotropic micro-LEGO building blocks. The first type is metallo-dielectric Janus particles fabricated through e-beam evaporation. The second type is ellipsoidal polystyrene particles produced by mechanical stretching. The third type is anisotropic hematite particles created using the gel-sol method. In this presentation, we will provide the details on how to prepare these anisotropic micro-LEGO building blocks and present preliminary results on their dynamic responses to external fields.
