The alignment layer of retardation film induces liquid crystal (LC) alignment mainly by polyimide rubbing method. However, this contact method has the disadvantage of generating dust and scratches, which reduces productivity and quality. In order to overcome these disadvantages, research on photo-alignment, which is a non-contact method, is being conducted. Mainly, cinnamate and chalcone materials accompanied by [2+2] cycloaddition reaction by linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) irradiation are widely used as photo-alignment materials. In this study, reactive additives for improving the orientation characteristics of photopolymers were synthesized and their properties were evaluated. As a result, higher alignment ratio and photoreactivity were exhibited by introducing reactive additives having various sturctures into the cinnamate- and chalcone-based photopolymers.
