To improve the flame retardancy of polypropylene(PP), this work was conducted to synthesize phosphorous-based flame retardants suitable for PP composite. The phosphorus flame retardant triphenlyphosphate (TPP) was grafted to styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer by using maleic anhydride (MA) as a linker. High volatility of TPP can be successfully depressed by grafting. Furthermore grafted TPP was expected to induce the formation of a denser char through the crosslinking reaction of the fuel radicals prepared during combustion of PP and SAN. Flame retarding PP composite was prepared by blend extrusion using a twin screw extruder with the synthesized phosphorus flame retardant and additives necessary for the intumescent flame retardant system. Industrial feasibility of flame retarding PP composite was evaluated by using FT-IR, TGA, 1H NMR. This work was supported by Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology(KIAT) grant funded by the Korea Government(MOTIE) (P0017002, HRD Program for Industrial Innovation)
